Want to get rid of some pesky wrinkles, but not quite sure how to best approach your problem areas? We’ve got the low-down from an expert dermatologist about all the key differences between botox and fillers. Keep reading for all the details.

Even though we aren’t exactly collecting social security checks over here, looking a tad younger and fresher is always welcome. But after we had sorted through various anti-aging serums, potions and lotions here at the HollywoodLife.com offices, we got to wondering about how we could get immediate wrinkle relief. Luckily, cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Oscar Hevia gave us some expert advice about the differences between instant fixes like Botox and filler injections.

Difference Between Botox V. Fillers – Dr. Oscar Hevia Explains The Difference

Dr. Oscar has treated the likes of Alexia Echevarria from Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Miami, so we knew we we’re getting some great advice!

As Botox has been heavily discussed and dissected this past decade, it can be totally overwhelming to find a simple description of the process. We already knew that Botox requires lots of little injections on the face, but we didn’t know that the wrinkle itself isn’t actually treated during the process, rather: “the muscles of expression in the region where the wrinkles are located.”

By injecting the muscles around the wrinkle and not penetrating the skin deeply, the Botox injection process is “very quick, with minimal discomfort, and usually without any bruising or swelling.” The results of the Botox are visible within three to five days, when the muscles around the wrinkle have fully responded to the injections.

The Differnces Between Botox And Fillers

Although fillers reduce the appearance of wrinkles, just like Botox, the two procedures actually differ quite a bit. While Botox is a serum/liquid type injection, fillers are a gel that is directly inserted into a wrinkle fold and provide immediately visible results. Fillers can also be inserted into areas of the face that need to be plumped up, but aren’t wrinkles — like under eye hollows. They can also be “injected into the deeper layers of the face to create a lifting effect.”

As such, fillers are a bit more of a flexible wrinkle treatment as they can be pretty simple (wrinkle injection) or substantial (‘liquid facelift,’ or injection of multiple, deeper layers of the face to 'lift')” says Dr. Oscar. However, while the treatment is technically faster than Botox, it does have more side effects. Says Dr. Oscar: “some swelling or early bruising can mask some of these immediate effects.”

So tell us what you think of Dr. Oscar’s advice, HollywoodLifers! Would YOU ever consider Botox or filler injections? Tell us below!
