As the countdown to the royal baby’s birth continues, bets are being placed on the baby’s name, gender, and physical traits. What do YOU think the baby’s name will be?
Kate Middleton, 31, and Prince William, 31, entered St. Mary’s Hospital on July 22 right before 6 a.m., meaning that the royal baby is on its way! And already, the bets are on — the baby’s name, gender, and physical characteristics are all hot betting items! Names like Diana and Charles have been on everyone’s radar since Kate announced her pregnancy, but other top contenders are showing up in bookies’ recordings.
Royal Baby Name — Bets Placed On Alexandra & George For Kate Middleton’s Child
Historical context is everything when naming a royal baby. It is traditional for royal families to name their heirs after their ancestors — and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have tons of inspiration from which to draw from. Elizabeth, Diana, Charles and Philip are all immediate references to the royal family — and popular choices among those placing bets on the name, according to Mail Online.
Still, the number one favorite name for a girl is Alexandra and the favorite for a boy is George. These are definitely traditional royal references, but they aren’t as immediate references as Diana and Charles.
Kate’s own family is also a potential source of name inspiration — her father’s name, Michael, is a possible contender for a boy’s name, as is his middle name, Francis. Both Will and Kate have links to the name Francis.
Any combination of these names could realistically make up the baby’s title, but surprising new names could be added to the mix.
Queen Elizabeth II Has The Final Say On The Baby’s Name
The Queen will be the first outside of the delivery room to learn about the baby’s birth, and she also has the final say on the baby’s name. She will be presented with the main contenders for approval before anything is official.
“The Queen is so down to earth that she’s not likely to jump up and down and say this boy has got to be called Charles and George. This isn’t going to be ‘Granny, do you approve?’ but more ‘These are the names we’ve chosen – do you like them?’ It’s much more of a personal thing these days,” royal writer Christopher Warwick tells The Daily Mail.
That’s not to say that the baby’s name is going the way of the nontraditional North West, but it sure takes a lot of the pressure off!
