“Lea started screaming, she was distraught. No one knew what to say. It was horrible. She couldn’t believe it,” a source told PEOPLE, referring to the moment Lea got the devastating call with the news.

A friend of Lea’s then reportedly suggested she leave home immediately to avoid unwanted attention from paparazzi once news of Cory’s death became public.

“She needed to get out of her house, it was extremely emotional. So she left and stayed in the home of her friend,” the source says.

Lea Michele: 'Grief-Stricken' After Cory Monteith's Death

Since then, Lea attended a private viewing on July 16 and has been leaning on friends and family for comfort. Thanks to her friends, she’s been able to do all of that in private.

"Lea is obviously very grief-stricken," Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy admitted in an interview with our sister-site TVLine. "It's been a very difficult thing for all of us, including Lea, to love someone who is an addict. It's something all of us have been dealing with for many months."

But Ryan was also quick to point out that Lea, 26, has shown unbelievable strength since Cory's death. "She's one of the strongest people I know," Ryan said.

Cory was found dead in his Vancouver hotel room on July 13. He was 31.
